
1. Necessity of carrying out cross Cultural input in English teaching
1.1 Analyses on the present situation of English Teaching in college
AS Hun Wenzhong, a famous professor of Beijing Foreign Language University put forward, when we learn a foreign language, we should develop two competences at the same time: Linguistic competence and social competence, which means cross-cultural communicative competence. This theory is widely accepted by our foreign language worker .In American linguist Robert Lado’s opinion, the target of learning a foreign language is making people to develop their abilities of understanding its meaning and connotation from this language and the related cultures. Therefore, there is no doubt internal or external scholars both attach importance to cultural element on foreign language teaching.
As china succeeded in attending WTO, globalization and information time is coming; too many composite talents who can master one or more foreign languages are eagerly being needed in the society. Surveying the present situation of English teaching in college, we can find that half is satisfactory and half is worrying. However, to our comfort : There are too many people who are studying English in our country ;more and more people begin to be interested in English ; college students pay much time and energy on English , and they have made great achievements in different kinds of English examination. But`, what we have to worry about is that many students can not use English properly ,and their abilities of using English do not get any improvements, what is more, many students are lack of cross cultural communicative competence, they make mistakes frequently. So many disadvantages that emerge in the students’ learning English make our English teaching workers have to introspect deeply.
1.2 Reasons for“ achieving are twice the result with half the effort ”in English Teaching
Reasons for this situation of happy and worry at the same time, on one hand, are that we pay more attention to pure English teaching, but less to students’ practical competence. Although we have doubted that the effect of pure language teaching for recent years , and here appears same new tendency, the consequence that pure language teaching has brought can not be put to an end in a short time; On the other hand, it is due to that we emphasize culture in teaching process. We emphasize foreign cultural study too much. To improve this situation, we have to carry out acculturation in intercultural communication in English Teaching.
